It took me many years of study and meditation to understand the meaning of what Jesus said, “You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” None of the studies, none of the commentaries answered the question to my satisfaction. I wanted to know how to be that perfect!
One day I looked at the whole paragraph before this verse. I noticed that Jesus told how the Father causes the sun to rise on moral people and immoral people in the same way. As a farm boy, I understood that it takes sun light for crops to grow. Then I gained understanding.
You see, the Father blesses all the farmers with the same sunlight no matter who they are or how they live. Even the Father does not judge who is worthy or unworthy of his blessing.
If you want to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect, then be a blessing to everyone you see, and you will grow into complete love.
